Event: LANCASTER HOUSE
Date: Monday 26 April 2010
Venue Stable Yard, St James’s, SW1
Time: 2.30pm
Cost: The cost depends on the number who wish to come on the visit as there is a fixed fee for the tour. If those who expressed an interest before all come, the cost will be around £5.  Maximum of 30 places.
Background: This replaces the previously arranged visit which had to be cancelled because a high-level conference took place at short notice. Since then the House has been renovated so we should see it at its best. We hope we will be more successful this time.

Lancaster House is a mansion house. Building began in 1825 and finished in 1840. It was designed by Benjamin Wyatt with interior by Sir Charles Barry and Sir Robert Smirke. The interior is mainly Louis X1V in style. Steeped in political history and magnificently preserved, Lancaster House has entertained more heads of state, politicians and celebrities than any other house in London. More than 150 years on, its grandeur remains undiminished.

Event: DOCKLANDS WALK
Date: Tuesday 11 May 2010
Time: 11.00am
Cost: £5 (maximum of 25 members)
Background: This replaces the walk arranged last June which had to be cancelled because of an industrial dispute on the Underground.

The walk will be led by Peter Lawrence, a Blue Badge guide and retired former Royal Protection officer. Members will recall he led the popular and successful walk around Belgravia in June 2008.

The theme of the walk is ‘Past, Present and Future’. The past is certain to take in buildings familiar to those members who worked in the old West India and Millwall Docks. The present will be a revelation to those who have not had an opportunity to take a close look at the new Docklands. As to the future, it would be true to say that it is far less certain than 12 months ago

The walk will end at the Docklands Museum. There are a variety of public houses and bars in the area but two in particular may appeal to members. First, ‘The Ledger Room’, a Wetherspoons pub just a few yards from the Docklands Museum. Second, the ‘Cat and Canary’, a Fuller's pub at 1-24 Fisherman’s Wharf which is just across the dock from the Museum and accessed by bridge.

Arrangements: Meet at the barrier to the Docklands Light Railway Station at Canary Wharf (not to be confused with the Jubilee Line Station).

The DLR can be picked up at Bank Station and the Jubilee Line at either Waterloo or London Bridge.

Booking deadline: Tuesday 4 May 2010
